In today's economy, keeping a business profitable is a challenge. As technology changes, businesses have to keep themselves up to date. This means changes to infrastructure, which adds to the operating costs. Today's business needs don't have to be met with in-house architecture; cloud computinghas done away with the old model of hardware and software needed to keep a company running. The high cost of bloated IT departments and expensive servers is becomming a thing of the past. Cloud computing technology today gives you as much computing power in the cloud that you have if you installed the same software on your server or desktop.
The previous incarnation of a business project involved purchasing lots of expensive server hardware to run the project management software that was accessed by a client workstation. The software was an additional cost, one that needed to be tailored to the type of client accessing it, and required purchasing additional client licenses. Data also needs to be stored, so there must be space on the network dedicated to that purpose.
That was fine when there were only a limited number of clients running a small number of operating systems. Now, in addition to the in house desktop, there are laptops, tablet computers, and smart-phones, all of which may be running different hardware and software architectures. This can limit the choice of client-server software, as IT departments look for an application that will run on all those devices.
This can be a management nightmare, especially as the business expands. A larger workforce means that more client licenses have to be purchased, and installed on the new workstations. More hardware may also be needed, if more clients join the in-house network. If data storage needs increase enough, more equipment must be added to provide the extra data space. The expense and in some cases downtime in changing hardware is extremely costly to business. Cloud computing does away with all of that.
Moving to a cloud model means that a business gets its applications and data delivered through any web browser. Project management software and data are now stored on servers housed outside the business's network. With a smaller hardware footprint, the business becomes more flexible. If the workload increases, a simple transaction increases the licenses and data store to match.
In addition, the business no longer has to worry about the intricacies of client hardware. Since the only software needed is a web browser any device that has one is now a fully-functional client, able to access the data and applications required to complete the project. There is no longer a need to purchase equipment and software to add to the workforce, nor spend the man-hours installing and testing that software. In the event of catastrophe trying to find an old operating system or matching version of software in order to re-install your backups are not a concern with a cloud computing model.
